Yes, it has been shown to improve the success rate. Acupuncture treatment uses tiny needles to stimulate certain acupuncture points that are associated with imbalances in the human body. These imbalances of Qi manifest themselves as medical conditions such as infertility. Regarding the success rate of FET, the benefits of acupuncture include:
- Facilitating a hormonal balance necessary for implantation and pregnancy.
- Relaxing the patient and relieving stress, which can contribute to the infertility problem.
- Encouraging blood circulation to the uterus through stimulation of specific meridians related to the reproductive system.
- Facilitating a healthy uterine lining thereby improving the chances of a successful implantation.
In addition to acupuncture treatment, practitioners at Centre of Balance Hamilton recommend a few lifestyle changes to improve the success rate of FET. This includes eating a healthy diet primarily comprised of whole foods and regular mild exercise.
What does Science say about FET and Acupuncture?
A randomised controlled trial published in the Acupuncture in Medicine journal sought to determine the effect of acupuncture in women undergoing FET. Specifically, they studied the impact of transcutaneous electrical acupuncture point stimulation (TEAS) on ultrasound markers of endometrial receptivity – using 3D power Doppler parameters and endometrial HOXA10 protein expression. This was achieved by stimulating acupuncture points on the legs and abdomen (Zigong, SP6, CV4, and CV3) of 68 women during three menstrual cycles leading to the FET.
The researchers from Shandong and Shanghai Jiaotong University compared the findings from a TEAS group and a mock TEAS group to determine the rate of live births, clinical pregnancy, embryo implantation, endometrial protein expression, and endometrial receptivity. They concluded that the acupuncture treatment increased the success of FET by improving the quality and structure of the uterine lining, rate of implantation, clinical pregnancies, and consequently the number of live births. Although the study only focused on the period prior to the frozen embryo transfer, it is important to continue acupuncture treatment post transfer.

To gain benefits from Chinese Medicine the patient must understand first that there is a difference between Chinese medicine and Western medicine. Chinese medicine has a complete system of physiology and pathology, which is different than Western medicine. The ailments/disharmonies that Chinese medicine is assessing are different than Western medicine. In Chinese medicine there is no such diagnosis as elevated FSH levels or PCOS. The hormone system in the body belongs to Western medical theory. However, Chinese medicine has its own causes and patterns of infertility, such as Shao Yin deficiency, origin Yang deficiency, Jue Yin malfunction etc. These infertility causes belong to Chinese medicine and cannot be treated with Western medical technologies, because of a simple reason that these causes are not part of a Western medical system. Bottom line is that both medical systems try their best to diagnose and treat infertility, however, mixing the two together will not necessarily produce the best results. For 3,000 years Chinese medicine has worked wonderfully by following Chinese medical guidelines and treatment principles. A patient suffering elevated FSH levels or PCOS may think that these are the only causes, however, she must realize that elevated FSH levels are caused by her own body and the same goes for PCOS and blocked Fallopian tubes. These problems, which are very real, come to life within the body. That means that your own body causes these problems and that they are not introduced from the outside. In Chinese medicine, the treatment is different than Western medicine. It aims at restoring the original correct body functions. Often times health problems are solved from within. Chinese medicine says, for example, Jue Yin malfunction will cause intra-menstrual bleeding, which is a similar symptom occurring with fibroid. When Jue Yin malfunction has resolved, intra-menstrual bleeding stops and may not come back. This may or may not have implications in regards to fibroid, such as the body stop producing them. The treatment strategy is non-the-less different. Western medicine removes fibroid surgically while Chinese medicine aims at curing the Jue Yin malfunction. Both might have similar result with different methods. The same is true with fertility. Western medicine will treat PCOS, blocked Fallopian tubes and hormonal imbalances, while Chinese medicine will treat Jue Yin, Shao Yin etc. resulting in a pregnancy. Different methods, different strategies all with a same goal.

In my opinion, Western medicine still is a "developing" medical system. It is still under the way to develop its new theory and find new tools to solve old clinic problems. Ask your western medicine doctor, how many chemical drugs are available in market for more than 10 or 20 years without kicked off and how can he ensures that the medicine he prescribes to you today will not be kicked off the market after several years? If he answers that it is impossible to know the side effects of a drug without testing it in clinic for years, then how brave he is to use an unknown chemical to human? Western medicine is as a car driving in a fog day. It falls into the ditch again and again. Though it can do organ transplantation, kidney dialysis, or gene therapy, it cannot help people to solve disease in an early stage, without spend money to do such things.
On the other side, it can be said that TCM is a kind of "developed" medicine. Its theory about body structure and function, about the relationship between human body and its emotion, spirit; between human being and environment factors, nature factors, universe planets, times, all are established thousands years ago. It is still the "bible" to guide TCM daily clinic work. No any one thereafter can deny the deep wisdom and knowledge in the bible, as well as the accurate of it in clinic guidance. The development of current science can only improve its theory and admit its far advanced knowledge.
TCM focuses to prevent the occur of disease, prevent the development of a disease to later stage. From history, it is the advantage of TCM that makes the surgery in TCM less developed. Surgery is left the only way for western medicine to proud it self, since the developed surgery in western medicine suggests its failure in its ability in internal medicine area. How many diseases can be cured without surgery? Ask this question: if the current western medicine is so advanced, why one out of nine women in Canada have risk of breast cancer? The incidence of breast cancer in China is only one out of thirty women!
Chinese Herbal Medicine is a complete treatment modality to increase fertility. Many patients who have had several unsuccessful IUIs/IVFs resort to Hunyuan Herbal Medicine treatment and become pregnant. Even though some patients do not succeed with conception, the overwhelming majority of patients finish the treatment much healthier than when they started.
Protocol: First the patient's condition is being evaluated according to Hunyuan Medicine principles, and then a formula of herbs is being composed to fit the patient's individual condition. The patient then returns once a week for observation (long distance patients every 2 weeks) and the formula is being modified according to the progress made. The weekly formula is in raw herbs form and cooked at home according to instructions provided. The patient drinks the tea once a day for 6 days. On the 7th day one breaks the herbal intake allowing the body adjustment time.
In addition Hunyuan FF Herbal Formula is given to the male and female partners to drink together (only available at our center). This formula is being taken for 3 months every evening (or until earlier pregnancy). This formula does not substitute the regular herbal treatment and is in addition to it. It targets improving the male's sperm quality and strengthening the bond between the partners.
