Homeopathic treatment for skin diseases

How does homeopathy help in treating skin diseases?

Homeopathy for skin diseases works on the principle of like cures like where small/diluted doses of natural elements are administered to the patient that produce similar symptoms of the condition you are suffering from. This, in turn, activates your own immune system that helps fight the disease and prepares your body to eradicate any such situation that may arise in the future. It just works like conventional vaccines.

Homeopathy is holistic: to treat a skin problem, one has to look at the whole person, not just at their skin.

Arsenicum album- It is usually prescribed for intensely itchy rashes that tend to look small, round patches that burn extensively after scratching. Skin conditions like rashes, dry, flaky and itchy skin are likely to respond to the Arsenicum album.

Sulphur- Sulphur treatment is prescribed typically to those people who are suffering from large red patches on their skin that appear dry, and flaky. It is most commonly used to treat eczema and psoriatic skin conditions.

Eczema conditions may get worse around the monthly period in women, for which homeopathic medicines like graphites are found to be helpful.

Lachesis- Lachesis with lower potency is the most commonly indicated as a homeopathic remedy for skin allergies which is characterized by symptoms like rashes that are itchy, dusky red,  and become worse in hot atmospheres. It also helps combat poor sleep and is found to be very helpful in treating rosacea.

Sepia- Prepared from the ink of a cuttlefish is a homeopathic indication that is helpful in treating long-standing eczema. It can effectively cure the rashes caused due to very dry skin affecting areas like the nose, chin, ears, and the genitals. Sepia is a homeopathic treatment that may be used to cure flare-ups that occur during pregnancy or due to the increased emotional stressors.

Pulsatilla – A homeopathic medicine for skin diseases like acne is predominantly prescribed in girls experiencing acne due to the premenstrual period.

Calcarea sulphurica- Calcarea sulphurica is extensively prescribed to the children who are suffering from eczema with large yellow pustules that are moist, itchy, discharging and slow to heal.

Some of the other homeopathically used medicines include Natrum mur used for eczema appearing in the joints, around the hair and mouth and genitals, Lycopodium- in eczema accompanied by liver complaints. Aurum metallicum prescribed in Atopic dermatitis can make the skin lesion free.

1. First Study:

Comparative Effectiveness of Homoeopathic vs. Conventional Therapy in Usual Care of Atopic Eczema in Children: Long-Term Medical and Economic Outcomes.[1].

A total of 135 children suffering from mild to moderate atopic eczema were included in the study to evaluate the effectiveness of homeopathic vs. conventional therapy in them.

The study involved two groups with 48 children receiving individualized homeopathy treatment, and the other group involving 87 patients were administered conventional treatment. The treatment lasted for around 36 months.

Outcome measures included SCORAD (SCORing Atopic Dermatitis),  quality of life, conventional medicine consumption, safety and disease related costs which were assessed at six, 12 and 36 months after baseline.

The results concluded that the effects of homoeopathic treatment were not superior to conventional treatment and involved higher costs in children suffering from mild to moderate atopic eczema.

The patients received varied homeopathic remedies throughout their treatment duration of one year.

Parameters like the quality of life were studied through questionnaires and average Urticaria Activity Score for 7 days (UAS7) collected at baseline 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months.

The results found showed a significant difference in CU-Q2oL score at baseline and 12th month. Also, at the end of the treatment 13 patients were found to be urticaria free and 21 patients showed well-controlled symptoms, while 34 patients have mild symptoms of urticaria after 12 months of intervention.

Summary

There has been a growing interest in the use of Homoeopathy in various dermatological disorders. As, Homoeopathic treatment focuses on a patient as a person, taking into consideration his/her pathological condition and providing total care of patients suffering from various skin conditions. The advantages of incorporating homeopathic medicine into the treatment of skin conditions include easy availability of the treatment, decreased usage of topical steroid creams, ease of administration, patient acceptability and low cost treatment. Further studies evaluating the efficacy of this natural system of healing with more sample size are desirable.
