A lady aged 35 years appeared in the OP complaining of radiating pain from low back to left thigh region. She also complained of numbness of left leg. Ayurveda treatise have specific line of treatment for Sciatica/ Ghridhrasi. Acharyas asvise Basti Karma (Therapeutic Enema and Sira Vyadha (Bloodletting Therapy) among the Panchakarma procedures. In this case disease is of recent origin, and the patient was not ready for Panchakarma procedures. Causative Factors – – Intake of excessive dry and stale food – Over use of foods which aggravate the Vata in the body – Heavy weight lifting and improper postures – Fall or InjuryThe condition was diagnosed as Vata – Kaphaja Ghridhrasi
Internal Medications provided
1. Rasna Saptakam Kashaya (decoction)
2. Yogaraja Guggulu tab
3. Chandraprabha Vati
4. Aswagandha Choorna
External Treatments and Yoga Therapy
Externally, Oil Massage with Maha Narayana Thaila and Steam was advised.
Kati Basti for a period of 9 days was done with Murivenna and Maha Narayana Thaila.
Gentle Yoga practices like Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Spinal twists and simple seated twists were advised.
Dietary Advises –
Diets rich in magnesium have been shown to promote sciatic nerve regeneration and reduce inflammation. Choose dark leafy greens such as baby spinach, collard greens, kale, or Swiss chard for the most magnesium.
After 14 days of internal and external Medications patient showed significant improvement in pain and numbness. Patient is advised for follow up after 3 months.
