A 40 year female came to our clinic with complaint of whitish skin lesion over her anterior forearm and posterior forearm since 7-8 years. She had tried conventional medication and didn’t see the white patches disappear. She had no family history of any skin disease. She is not diabetic or hypersensitive; typical symptoms for appearance of white patches on skin. After my initial analysis, and diagnosis, I realized that she had Vitiligo, a condition where patches of skin lose their pigmentation. In Vitiligo, the melanocytes the cells that produce the pigment are not functioning properly.
Case Management
Based on her condition of Vitiligo, I prescribed her the following Ayurvedic prescription:
Gomutra Haritaki tablet
Panchtikta Guggulu ghrita tablet
Svayambhuv tablet
Khadira aristha
Arogyavrhini vati
Switrahara choorna
Switrahara lepa
In addition, I put the client on a strict diet plan as well for a period of 5 months.
5 Month follow up:
The patient came back after 5 months of treatment and showed no signs of white patches. Please see the images attached. She had been treated almost 100% from Vitiligo. With Ayurvedic Treatment along with a strict diet plan for specific disease Vitiligo can be treated with success as is evident in this case.
Note: The above-given prescription is strictly meant for this particular patient only. Every patient has a unique body structure and symptoms. I recommend that you consult with qualified Ayurvedic physicians for proper treatment and prescription. This case is just to showcase the success outcome from Ayurvedic medicine for Vitiligo.
Case Discussion:
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where the skin pigment-producing cells are attacked and destroyed, resulting in irregular white patches of skin. Vitiligo is a skin condition where skin areas shed their color. It may also affect the eyes, the inside of the mouth, and hair. Generally, the areas affected remain stained for the remainder of the individual’s life. The status is photosensitive. This means that the affected regions will be more sensitive to sunlight than the ones which are not. It’s difficult to predict if the stains will spread and how much. The spread may take weeks, or the spots might stay stable for months or even years. The lighter patches are far more visible in people with dark or tanned skin.
Vitiligo can be classified into two kinds.
1. Segmented vitiligo: this sort of vitiligo tends to propagate fast but is stable compared to another type. It’s asymmetrical and affects such parts of the skin that are linked to nerves which arise in the dorsal roots across the spinal cord.
2. Non- Segmental Vitiligo: this sort of vitiligo happens in equal proportions on each side of the body. This disorder affects the regions of the skin that are frequently exposed to sunlight, like the arms, neck, and face.
Leucoderma Causes: There’s no known cause of vitiligo. Nonetheless, the probable causes are discovered to be injury from a stressful event, chemical exposure, and genetics. It might also result from complications from the immune system.
Leucoderma Symptoms:
1. The principal manifestation of vitiligo is the appearance of white spots on the skin.
2. The first patches that occur on the skin are somewhat pale in color, which becomes paler over time and ultimately turn white, thus making them look different and notable on the skin.
3. The advantage of these stains may become inflamed and cause itching.
4. Direct exposure to the skin can cause the symptoms to aggravate.
Ayurvedic view of vitiligo or Leucoderma: Based on Ayurveda, Leucoderma is caused because of the aggravation of Pitta Dosha. Pitta is an Ayurvedic comedy that symbolizes fire or heat and is shown in the skin. Aggravated Pitta contributes to the accumulation of ama (toxins) in deep layers of the skin, causing the state of leucoderma. Vitiligo & Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, Vitiligo or Shwitra is a Tridosha, meaning it is due to a vitiation of all three doshas. The Pitta dosha has the most imbalance. Pitta is of five kinds, among these being the Bhrajak Pitta that is responsible for the coloration of the skin.
The Ayurvedic way of treating vitiligo not only entails treating the white patch itself but also addressing the underlying causes of this illness, making sure it does not replicate. Ayurveda aims to stop the spreading of white spots, and then start working on curing the disease by:
– Shrinking the white spots
– Rejuvenating skin tissue
– Promoting the development of melanoblasts that covers the white spots
– Increase consumption of vegetables which are bitter in flavor, like drumsticks and bitter gourd.
– Stay away from hard to digest foods, sour taste, excessive salt, curd, fish, jaggery, and sesame seeds.
– Avoid ingestion of foods that are opposite, such as fish and milk together.
– Have adequate and sound sleep daily.
– Don’t over-expose to excessive heat or cold conditions.
