A sudden, severe, and constant pain and
stiffness in left shoulder and neck began 5 days ago. X-ray showed a
degenerative joint disease in neck and left shoulder. He had difficulty with
simple tasks such as putting on clothes and brushing teeth and hair. There was
no position, whether lying down, sitting, or standing, that provided relief. In
addition, his low back and legs felt weak. An anti-inflammatory medication only
minimally reduced pain.
Acupuncture: Left-side yang horary points in
Metal-Order of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36.
Treatment process: The patient had a total of 6 acupuncture
treatments at twice a week visit. On the first day, he received acupuncture
lying prone on a flat table, which aggravated the pain only within 5 minutes.
But he remained patient in the position for 20 minutes. Upon getting up, the
shoulder pain was worse than prior to acupuncture. However, he noticed a
significant relief of pain and the shoulder felt loose on the drive back home.
Normal activities around the house had easily aggravated the pain. However, each visit was immediately and
significantly helpful in reducing the pain in intensity, frequency, and
duration. After the 5th visit, for the first time in 10 years, his examination with the doctor showed
decrease of blood pressure from 140/90 down to 120/80 and cholesterol down by
20 points. In addition, his shoulder
range of motion was almost back to normal. His body felt stronger and alive.
Discussion: Out of desperation, he tried acupuncture
because he was flying on an airplane to another state for a family reunion in 3
weeks. He was very concerned that the trip would be too painful especially in
the airplane. Because his diet was consistently well-balanced and clean, even
with such a significant attack, the relief was fast and good. It was because
his diet allowed his body to have a higher potential for improvement.
