Complaints: Hearing loss began 6 years ago and was frighteningly
worsening for the last 6 months even with specialists and medications. She was 80%
deaf in right ear and 20% deaf in left. She had 4 major Meniere’s attack with projectile
vomiting. She often felt pressure in ears with severe sound reverberation in
the head that left her unable to function. MRI only showed fluid in ear sac. Diuretic
prescription for 2 years did not help. Year-round hay fever with post-nasal
drip and cough. Acid reflux with fresh ginger.
Acupuncture: Right-side Yang Horary points in Wood-Order of
GB41, SI2, ST43, LI5, and UB40 (ST36 is as good) with Fire points LI2, ST44,
UB66, and GB43 for a constitution with Greater Yin and Lesser Yang combination
(aka Pitta-Kapha in Ayurveda, Choleric in Unani, and Taeeumin in Sasang).
Sasang herbal medicine was Shi Eri Wei Da Bu Tang (Ge Gen, Long Yan Rou, Yi Yi
Ren, Mai Men Dong, Tian Men Dong, Gao Ben, Huang Qin, Sheng Ma, Xing Ren, Wu
Wei Zi, and Shan Yao).
Treatment process: The patient had acupuncture treatment once
or twice a week. The first 2 treatments of Metal-Order of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5,
and ST36 did not help. But Wood-Order
immediately reduced headaches and increased sense of well-being. She took herbs
daily and eliminated chicken, turmeric, ginger, lettuce, and cabbage which she
was consuming much of. Her symptoms had lessened weekly. By the end of 8th week,
the symptoms had drastically improved by overall 80%.
Discussion: Her biggest fear was the loss of hearing. It was
not easy for me to see the patient in such a bad and almost hopeless situation.
The chronic consumption of harmful foods was likely the culprit. Identifying
her constitution helped to eliminate the wrong foods and include the correct treatments
for speedy recovery.
