60 year old woman came to our clinic with complaint of recurring Urinary Tract Infection, asthma and hypertension for the last 6 months. She has been taking regular medication for quite some time but hadn’t found any relief for her problem. In addition to urinary tract infection, she has been suffering from Asthma and had to use asthalin inhalers and take medication for hypertension. She further described winter season to be the worst with her asthma attacks and headaches to be flared quite a bit. She was also hospitalized for high blood pressure, asthma and headaches. To make her condition worse, she is constipated and would have the tendency to urinate frequently. She is also prone to dust as her asthma flares up and she takes lot of medication to clear her bowel movement. She had lost all hope to get her health back. This case was conundrum of so many issues and was difficult for a single remedy to find an optimal solution.
In Homeopathy, sulphur is often recommended as antipsoric. In my experience, Nux Vomica is equally good as it helps to clear up the symptoms that have been suppressed by regular medicine.
In addition the patient would use unconscious and faint quite often and it is difficult to differentiate as in Homeopathy both the condition are treated separate. If the patient has been unconscious, then the rubric should be taken to mind section as opposed to general in case the patient complains of faintness.
I decided to give her Nux Vomica 200 and advised her to start yoga, exercise, modification to her diet.
1 week follow-up in Nov.: Patient complained of asthma attack and breathlessness. I started thinking of Nux Vomica vs Carbo Veg and Arsenic and finally decided to her a dose of Carbo Veg. and asked her to repeat the dose every half hour until she gets relief from breathlessness. She got relief after 3 dose of medication. She came back to our clinic with a glow on her face. Her urine issues had subsided along with her headaches and breathlessness. She wanted to get off her meds. I warned her to change her diet and start taking low sodium diet to control her high blood pressure. I even prescribed her regular yoga, exercise. Since then, patient hasn’t had any compliance issues and has been leading a healthier life for the last two years.
