Case Discussion:
Ayurveda Title: Gradhrasi or Sciatica (Back pain)
Cause fo Sciatica: According to Ayurveda, Sciatica is usually caused by an increase or annoyance of Vata dosha. The buttocks and also part of the legs and thighs are serviced from the Sciatica nerve. Pressing of this Sciatica nerve and inflammation of the regions surrounding the Sciatica nerve contribute to the medical condition. The damage of this Sciatica nerve slows down or prevents the conduction of impulses through the nerve.
The sciatica nerve may be inflamed or damaged because of strenuous activity such as overexertion, lifting weights, or over-exposure to chilly weather. Sitting or lying down with pressure for an extended time on the hips may also damage the nerve. Systemic diseases such as diabetes can typically damage many different nerves, including the Sciatica nerve. The Sciatica nerve might also be hurt by fracture of the pelvis or other trauma to the buttocks or thighs.
Symptoms: Back pain experienced in the area of the buttocks, the back of the thigh, or the leg. Clients experience difficulty walking.
Sensation changes in the trunk, in the calf or the sole of the feet
Numbness and diminished sensation
Tingling and burning sensations
moderate or severe pain
The weakness of the foot or knee leading to problems in walking
Inability to move the foot (severe case)
Inability to flex the knee (severe case)
AYURVEDA TREATMENTS:
In Ayurveda, Sciatica is treated with a mixture of internal herbal pills, herbal decoctions and elixirs/ wine, and outside oil programs and hot fomentation.
Internal remedy: Ayurvedic herbal pills are known as “Yogaraja Guggulu.” Guggulu is a resin obtained from the shrub Camphora Mukul, located in South Asia. The Yogaraja Guggulu is produced by making a paste of Guggulu resin, 25 kinds of herbs, and ghee. The medicine is quite effective in treating pains of the nervous system.
Herbal elixir or wine is known as the “Dashamula Arishta.” This liquid contains about 63 herbs, jaggery (molasses), plums, water, and honey. The word “Dashamula” is derived from the fact that it’s ten primary component herbs (Dasa in Sinhala means ten). The medication has anti-inflammatory properties. It heals the nerves and helps the nerves to operate as healthy nerves.
Fresh herbal decoctions are prepared by boiling a high number of fresh and dry herbs (up to 20 chemicals ). Based on the patients’ condition, these decoctions also help reduce the pain associated with the disease.
To prevent constipation, that can further often aggravate the symptoms, Castor oil is prescribed for internal use with the decoctions. Castor oil is a useful purgative and has the qualities of reducing the impact of constipation associated with Vata Dosha.
Topical treatment: Topical oil program on the painful areas of the body, especially the trunk area, buttocks, and part of the legs and thighs with the medicinal oil known as “Sarshapadi.” This therapeutic oil is ready with the foundation of camphor, mustard oil, and vegetable turpentine
Hot application of the painful parts with the assistance of “Bolus” or packs of dry and fresh herbal components and sea salt wrapped in fabric. The oil massage and fomentation improve blood circulation, stimulate and heal the nerves. It also helps to reduce the aggravated Vatha Dosha and helps to decrease the pain.
Prospects of treatment: Most of the people have been healed of this ailment. A treatment takes about four weeks of therapy. Reduction of symptoms is typically seen after about 2 – 3 months of therapy.
