Basti Treatment in Ayurveda
Basti is one of the ayurvedic procedures of panchakarma. The panchakarma is a collective term that refers to five therapies. These are Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Nasya (nasal instillation of herbs in the form of oil or powders), Basti, or Vasti (herbal enema), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting). These procedures are useful in combination as a way of detoxifying the body.

A Therapeutic Course of Basti in Obesity
Basti, known for a medicated enema, is a preferred course for the treatment of obesity. One such study was conducted in obese patients to determine immunological & metabolic responses of Basti therapy. The reactions showed a significant increase in immune responses of the body. The critical mechanisms responsible for this are the regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, immunoglobulins, and functional properties of T-cells. Hence, it resulted in a significant reduction in weight loss, which remained stagnant for a minimum of three years. Moreover, Basti treatment was found to be safe.
Conclusion:One of the components of panchakarma, i.e., Basti, if applied with adjunct therapies, can give fruitful results in improving overall health.
