What is chronic fatigue syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) affects multiple body systems and is a severe and long-term condition. Another name for this is myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Individuals with ME/CFS are often unable to do their everyday activities. Occasionally, ME/CFS may confine them to bed. Individuals with ME/CFS have severe fatigue and sleep issues. ME/CFS may worsen following people with the illness attempt to do as much as they desire or have to do. This symptom is called post-exertional malaise (PEM). Other symptoms can include issues with focusing and thinking, pain, and nausea.

What Causes Fatigue?

According to Ayurveda, fatigue is caused by overuse, misuse, or no usage of their mind, body, or emotions. For example, your job could be simple for you, but if you need to devote a great deal of overtime, it could lead to fatigue.

Ayurvedic view of chronic fatigue

How does Ayurveda view chronic fatigue? Ayurveda views Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as an imbalance of Vata Dosha in the body. Chronic fatigue syndrome can be a result of an accumulation of Ama in the body and is a composite of imbalanced Vata (and Pitta) Dosha and gathered Ama.
Ayurvedic texts teach that exhaustion is caused because of reduced gastric fire and weakness of the liver. It’s this poor or low gastric fire that contributes to Ama formation. Ama is the leading cause of all diseases in the body. Therefore proper treatment of Ama can enable quite a ways to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
