Health Benefits for Peanuts in Medical Condition:
Antioxidants:
Peanuts contain high amounts of polyphenolic compounds, especially, p-coumaric acid. This compound prevents the incidence of stomach cancer by decreasing the formation of harmful nitrosamines in the stomach. Peanuts also contain the antioxidant, resveratrol. This anti-oxidant has many benefits like preventing damage to the blood vessels, by decreasing the susceptibility of the blood vessels against angiotensin, a hormone that increases blood pressure.
Neurodegenerative disorders:
Peanuts are fortified with the essential vitamins, like niacin. Many studies have indicated that niacin has protective activity against many neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Niacin also promotes efficient blood flow to the brain, thus improving cognitive ability and general health of the brain. Even resveratrol improves the blood flow to the brain by as high as 30%, thereby decreasing the chances of strokes.
Heart Diseases:
Peanuts are rich in monosaturated fats, which are essential to maintaining a healthy heart. The oleic acid present in the monosaturated fats helps to lower the bad cholesterol and increases the level of HDL, or good cholesterol. Even the anti-oxidant, resveratrol stimulates the production and release of nitric acid, which dilates the blood vessels, thereby reducing the pressure on the heart and improving blood flow.
