Complaints: Left sciatica down the leg into ankle for 2
years at a pain level of 7/10. Extensive therapies have not helped. She had no
low back pain. In addition, she had a sensation of pins and needles on left
sole of foot. MRI showed 2-4mm disc bulges and stenosis in lumbar. She was only
able to walk up to 20 minutes before needing a rest.
Acupuncture: Left-side yang horary points in Metal-Order of
LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36.
Treatment process: The patient had 5 acupuncture treatments
at twice a week so far. After the first treatment, she noticed a significant
relief next day. After the second visit, she sprained her right ankle due to a
mis-step, which led to a severe bruising and swelling. But sciatica was still
better at 4-5/10. On the fifth visit, the patient reported consistently having
almost no sciatica at 1/10 and the sensation of pins and needles on the sole of
left foot was also less. Lastly, the right ankle sprain was healing much more
quickly than expected.
Discussion: Regardless of age, acupuncture is a good solution
for pain and healing so that the elderly can have a quality living.
