Healthy adult female, no prior history of sciatica or lower back pain.
I performed a 1 hour session of massage therapy incorporating Swedish, myofascial release and deep bodywork therapy. I first provided massage in prone position with emphasis on back spinal extensors as well as quadratus lumborum. I next performed deep bodywork on gluteal muscles with emphasis on deep hip lateral rotators ( GOGOPQ). I performed a stretch of upper legs into hyperextension with firm bracing on sacrum. Client reported stretch feeling on left side in quadriceps, while reporting a stretch feeling in psoas on the right side. This indicates a muscle length imbalance between left and right and shortening of psoas major on right side. Next I performed massage supine of legs with a focus on quadriceps and TFL muscles. Lastly I performed deep bodywork treatment on psoas for both left and right side. Left side had normal tone and normal sensitively. Right side psoas muscle was hypertonic and client was very sensitive to deep bodywork. I finished sessions with PNF stretching using contract, relax in several positions of flexion. Client reported improved symptoms after treatment.
