Complaints: Neck pain off and on for 2 years with radiation
down left trapezius and front of chest. At times, he had tingling sensation in
the scalp. For past 6 months, it was constant and the intensity steadily
worsened. The possible cause was head-butting life-long soccer with bumping and
head-butting. MRI showed normal for age.
Acupuncture: Yang Horary points on left-side in Wood-Order
of GB44, SI2, ST43, LI5 and ST36 (ST36 is substituted for UB40).
Treatment process: The patient had 6 acupuncture sessions before
leaving for a 1-month trip. The initial treatments were in Metal-Order of LI1,
UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36. The initial treatments dramatically helpful although
there were episodes of severe pain. During the trip, the pain was almost as frequent
and excruciating as before. On return from trip, he continued acupuncture. A switch
to Wood-Order dramatically relieved the pain again but the improvement was more
stable this time. Even a new hamstring injury recovered quicker than before as
an athlete.
Discussion: Even the less-than-optimal points are helpful but
there is a limit to their efficacy. When a switch to even better set of points was
made, they provided an even more improvement.
