Complaints: Constant neck, head, and left ear pain for 1
year. It was aggravated with hot shower, elevated noise, and anxiety. Exhaustive
tests ruled out problems other than cervical disc herniation and possible
multiple sclerosis. Prone to anxiety. Chronic insomnia.
Acupuncture: Left-side Yang Horary points in Metal-Order of
LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36.
Treatment process:
The patient had 6 acupuncture treatments so far at twice a week visit. The
first treatment immediately relieved the pain. She reported the relief was
still better at the second visit and decided to taper down on the narcotic Vicodin.
Each treatment was additionally helpful in not only reducing the pain but also
increasing sense of well-being regarding intensity, frequency, and duration.
Although there was minor fluctuation of the symptoms from day to day, the weekly
improvement was clear. The chemical withdrawal was minor. Even when there was a
multiple sclerosis flare-up, there was an immediate relief after an acupuncture
session.
Discussion: The patient is encouraged from less pain and
increased sense of well-being. She is seeing the possibility of good
improvement after one year of constant difficulties.
