Complaints: Low back pain with sciatica down right leg into ankle. Low back tightens up every night and disrupts sleep.
Acupuncture: Right-side Yang Horary points in Wood-Order of GB44, SI2, ST43, LI5, and UB40 (ST36 is as good). Left-side Yin Horary points in Metal-Order of LU11, KD2, LR3, HT4, and SP9. Local knee points XiYan and Heding.
Treatment process: There was no relief after the first treatment of right-side Yang Horary points in Metal-Order of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36. On the second visit, a Wood-Order gave an immediate and continuation of relief linearly improvement with less intensity, frequency, and duration into 5th visit. He also needed less medication. There was no further improvement from 6th to 8th visit. On the 9th visit, an addition of left-side Yin Horary points in Wood-Order of LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, and KD10 did not produce relief although right-side was given Wood-Order of Yang Horary points. A change to Metal-Order on 10th to 14th visits gave an immediate relief of pain and even less need for medication.
Discussion: One-sided acupuncture is sufficient in treating many issues. When there is a premature limit on the efficacy of acupuncture, the other side should also be acupunctured. Furthermore, Wood- and Metal- Orders need to be tested on each side since bilateral points are often not a mirror image.
