Recurring Bladder Infections/Interstitial Cystitis: this case history is representative of many women (and some men) who fall into the vicious cycle of repeated bladder infections, using antibiotics each time for treatment. What usually happens is the antibiotics kill off the friendly bacteria leaving the patient susceptible to another infection. If the process continues long enough you can develop a situation of chronic infection since the friendly bacteria prevent infection. After repeated infections and subsequent antibiotic use the lining of the bladder can become so irritated that the nerve endings become inflamed, creating an extremely painful situation called Interstitial Cystitis, which this patient developed. The doctors then prescribed a specific pain medication for her bladder pain which was only minimally effective.
