Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, a global pandemic as we all know is a lifestyle metabolic disorder which has been proven beyond doubt through several scientific studies across the world.
So, in managing this lifestyle metabolic disorder; lifestyle changes are mandatory & necessary in every case along with conventional system of medicine management with medication as per the requirement, based on each case’s history and lifestyle.
From the perspective of Yoga and its philosophy, human beings are made of five layers of being called as Pancha-Koshas (pancha means 5, koshas mean layers). These 5 layers are Annamaya Kosha (physical being), Pranamaya Kosha (energy being), Manomaya Kosha (mental & emotional being), Vijnanamaya Kosha (Intellectual being) & Anandamaya Kosha (Ultimate blissful being).
Yoga therapy believes that almost all kinds of illnesses, more so the lifestyle disorders arise from the imbalances in our Manomaya Kosha through various ups and downs in our mental & emotional being in the present rushed day-to-day lives of our human race. These imbalances, over a period of time trickle down to create imbalances in our Pranamaya kosha (energy being). But, the imbalances at this layer are very subtle and most of the time we are unaware of it. Further, as we go on ignoring these imbalances; they further trickle down to our Annamaya Kosha (physical being) manifesting into several different lifestyle illnesses, Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is one of them, based on each individual’s propensity to develop the illness.
Having understood this concept, Yoga therapy is one of the prominent holistic therapy which addresses all the layers of our being from Manomaya Kosha to Annamaya Kosha to bring about a balance in these koshas; thereby managing the illness very effectively.
Cancellations are allowed 24 hours prior to scheduled appointment.
Yoga therapy addresses Annamaya Kosha with several yogic asanas (postures) which bring about a change in our metabolism by improving the blood circulation and ability of our cells to respond to our hormones all over the body through the stretches in the postures.
At pranamaya kosha level; pranayamas and specialized breathing techniques shall bring about a balance in our energy being. Also, in terms of modern science to understand; ancient breathing techniques like pranayama are one of the few practices which bring about a balance in our autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic & parasympathetic. This balance has a direct effect in managing our emotions and mind.
The breathing techniques are considered as the bridge between our physical and mental being; that is Annamaya & Manomaya kosha. Having done the above practices as groundwork for body & energy (breath/prana) being; it becomes very easy to address our mind (manomaya kosha) to bring about a balance in our emotions, thought processes and slowing down our thoughts through practices of yoga nidra, several relaxation techniques & meditation.
A holistic approach by the above yogic methods can be very effective in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus which brings about a personality change in people to become more aware of their body and its illness. This awareness shall bring about a major lifestyle change which effectively manages the illness and leads to wellness.
And most importantly, yoga therapy is an important and necessary tool which enhances and rejuvenates the innate vitality of our being which is always at work to bring about a state of homeostasis in our day to day lives.
