Leucoderma Ayurvedic Treatment (Vitiligo)

Table of Contents

What is vitiligo or leucoderma?

Leucoderma, also called vitiligo is a skin disease that affects nearly 2% of the world population.  Allopathy practice now provides corrective steps, but no treatment. By comparison, the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Indian Ayurvedic text, describes leucoderma with recommendations for therapy.

Vitiligo (Leucoderma) is characterized by the creation of white patches on the skin. Though it is a benign skin problem, vitiligo may influence your self-esteem. Ayurveda has demonstrated promising results by treating the individual as the whole rather than the symptoms. Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where the skin pigment-producing cells are attacked and destroyed, resulting in irregular white patches of skin.

Vitiligo is a skin condition where skin areas shed their color. It may also affect the eyes, the inside of the mouth, and hair. Generally, the areas affected remain stained for the remainder of the individual’s life. The status is photosensitive. This means that the affected regions will be more sensitive to sunlight than the ones which are not. It’s difficult to predict if the stains will spread and how much. The spread may take weeks, or the spots might stay stable for months or even years. The lighter patches are far more visible in people with dark or tanned skin. Vitiligo is a chronic (long-term ) disease that leads to areas of skin to drop color. When skin cells that make color are attacked and destroyed, the skin turns a milky-white color.

Vitiligo can be classified into two types.

1. Segmented vitiligo: this sort of vitiligo tends to propagate fast but is stable compared to another type. It’s asymmetrical and affects such parts of the skin that are linked to nerves which arise in the dorsal roots across the spinal cord.

2. Non- Segmental Vitiligo: this sort of vitiligo happens in equal proportions on each side of the body. This disorder affects the regions of the skin that are frequently exposed to sunlight, like the arms, neck, and face.

Causes: There’s no known cause of vitiligo. Nonetheless, the probable causes are discovered to be injury from a stressful event, chemical exposure, and genetics. It might also result from complications from the immune system.

Symptoms:

1. The principal manifestation of vitiligo is the appearance of white spots on the skin.

2. The first patches that occur on the skin are somewhat pale in color, which becomes paler over time and ultimately turn white, thus making them look different and notable on the skin.

3. The advantage of these stains may become inflamed and cause itching.

4. Direct exposure to the skin can cause the symptoms to aggravate.

Ayurvedic view of vitiligo

Based on Ayurveda, Leucoderma is caused because of the aggravation of Pitta Dosha. Pitta is an Ayurvedic comedy that symbolizes fire or heat and is shown in the skin. Aggravated Pitta contributes to the accumulation of ama (toxins) in deep layers of the skin, causing the state of leucoderma.

Pitta is of five kinds; among these is Bhrajak Pitta that provides coloration to skin. In Leucoderma, Bhrajak Pitta is imbalanced, and for that reason, the skin begins losing its color, and white spots appear. Along with Pitta Dosha, deeper body tissues such as Rasa Dhatu (nutrient plasma), Rakta (blood), Mansa (muscles), Lasika (lymph) are also included with the disease.

Treatment includes pacifying imbalanced body energies, cleansing the blood, and administering herbs to restore skin color. Poor digestion is the leading cause of the disease, as it results in the build-up of toxins from the tissues. A vital part of therapy, therefore, is restoring digestion. The individual will also be advised on the correct diet and lifestyle adjustments to avoid the recurrence of the disease.

Where can vitiligo occur? Vitiligo can develop anywhere in your body, such as:

Sun-exposed areas such as the hands, arms, feet, and face

within the mouth or other mucus membranes

Nostrils

Genitals

the rear of the eye

Inside the hearing system of the ear

Your hair can also turn gray or white if the regions involved have hair on it.
