Building a Better Squat Helps with Obesity- Part 2


If you struggle with knee pain and/or lower back pain, the problem may arise from the feet. Yes, the feet can affect the entire body. It makes sense if you think about it. Your feet support the weight of your entire body and if they are unable to carry the load, it will wreak havoc on the entire body. 

By lengthening the tissues of the bottom of the feet, it takes pressures of the arches of the feet and prevents inward movement of the knees. Our tissues on the bottom of the feet get tight because we wear shoes and walk on concrete. The human body was designed to be barefoot and walk on grass. So, naturally, our body adjusts to the environment in which it lives. 

The tissues on the bottom of the feet become tight and can cause the arches to collapse. The collapse of the arch runs all up the kinetic chain. It will put extra stress on the shins and knees and eventually creep into the upper legs and lower back. 

This is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. Fixing this could be the lead domino in helping you get on track to your perfect health.

Using a lacrosse ball, golf ball, or baseball, you'll massage the bottom of your foot, from heel to the ball. In doing so, this will help increase the length of those tissues, alleviating the stress placed on the arches. 

Take note of any spots that are more tender or painful than others. These will the spots you will need to address. In order to alleviate these tight spots, you'll need to apply pressure (with chosen ball) for at least thirty seconds. This may be difficult to do at first. You may have to work up to longer durations depending on your pain threshold. 

In reality, there is no wrong way to do it. The pressure applied to the foot will help increase circulation and help to increase soft tissue extensibility. I would encourage you to be patient with this process. It is a process and will take consistent effort over an extended period of time to alleviate symptoms and optimize your movement.
