Leg cramp and low back pain treated with acupuncture
Total years in practice: 20
Complaints: Severe cramping of the legs, especially in the left calf, causing disturbed sleep at night. Chronic low back pain.
Acupuncture: Right-side Yin horary points in the Wood Order of LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, & KD10. Left-side Yang horary points in the Metal Order of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, & ST36. Being a Lesser Yin and Greater Yin constitution (Kapha in Ayurveda and Melancholic in Unani), earth points LI11 and SP3 were added.
Treatment process: The patient had acupuncture three times a week in the first 3 weeks and then tapered down to twice a week. By the 14th treatment, the spasm and low back pain were mostly gone. Because this patient was mildly reactive to acupuncture, Metal-Order and Wood-Order were alternatively given until the correct points were identified. In addition, only one side of the body at a time was tested. Since then, he gets regular maintenance treatment at once a month for stress and elevated sense of well-being, totaling 147 treatments for 5 ½ years.
Discussion: Some patients have patience and trust to give chance with many visits. And they like acupuncture as a lifestyle for increased quality of daily living.
