Treatment Process: 10 acupuncture treatments 3 years ago for rectocele surgery was successful. One year later, 6 treatments were helpful for stress and pelvic pain from sitting all day at work. Another year later, 3 acupuncture treatments were helpful for right shoulder pain from too much computer work. Recently, the patient had another surgical procedure, which was like an episiotomy, for a growing cyst near rectum. 6 treatments again reduced much pain and accelerated recovery. 


Discussion: 3 years ago, the initial 6 visits in Metal-Order for rectocele post-surgery was helpful but a switch to Wood-Order was even more helpful. The patient came back for 3 courses of acupuncture in 3 years. A repetition of Wood-Order every time was predictably helpful, indicating these points are constitutional.

Acupuncture: Right-side Yang Horary points in Wood-Order of GB44, SI2, ST43, LI5, and ST36 (ST36 is as good as UB40) with central Earth points LI3, SI3, GB41, and UB65 for a Lesser Yin and Greater Yin constitution (Excessive Water-Wood, Deficient Fire-Earth-Metal, Kapha in Ayurveda, Cold-Dry Melancholic in Unani, ISFJ in Myers-Briggs, Affiliation in Need, and Soeumin in Sasang).


Treatment process: 3 years ago, she had 12 acupuncture treatments for right wrist and neck pain. 4 sessions in Metal-Order of LI1, UB66, GB41, SI5, and ST36 relieved much pain but afterwards the wrist was easily re-aggravated. 5th treatment did not help. A change to Wood-Order from the 6th into 12th visit gradually relieved the pain and provided stability of the improved state. Wrist pain began to come back 2 months later. She also had left calf spasm. A repeat of Wood-Order with addition of Earth points for 5 treatments had again eliminated the pains. She came back 3 weeks ago with left neck pain, which was radiating down to left leg. A repeat of the same Wood-Order points for 4 treatments was again successful.   


Discussion: The beauty of acupuncture is that it is safe and does not aggravate a problem or pain. It is either beneficial or not helpful. In this case, the Metal-Order was initially working but showed its limitation. A switch to alternate points using Wood-Order helped to eliminate the pain or provide stability of the improved state.

Complaints: For 10 years, ulcerative colitis attack once a year and lasting for 1-2 weeks. Abdominal ache, intestinal inflammation, and frequent diarrhea, which are aggravated by stress, gluten, dairy, caffeine, and egg white.  


Acupuncture: Right-side Yin Horary points in Wood-Order of LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, and KD10. His constitution is a Lesser Yin and Greater Yin combination (aka Kapha in Ayurveda, Cold-Dry Melancholic in Unani, Soeumin in Sasang, ISFJ in Myers-Briggs, and affiliation in Need)  


Treatment process: 7 years ago, he had 10 acupuncture treatments with right-side four needle technique for Spleen tonification SP2, HT8, SP9, KD10 and Heart tonification HT7, SP3, HT3, KD10. The improvement was quick and linear with less intensity, frequency, and duration. 4 years ago, he had another intestinal episode. 3 treatments of Right-side LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, and KD10 had again helped. 6 treatments 3 years ago and 3 treatments this year with right-side LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, KD10 with Earth points LR3, KD3, HT7, and LU9 for his body type had helped as well.


Discussion: Digestive problems are closely related to foods. The patient was advised to reduce or avoid cold foods such as cucumber, celery, and aloe. Egg white, gluten, caffeine, and dairy are also cold. Furthermore, he was recommended to reduce dry foods such as lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and chard.

Complaints: Some esophageal herniation even after a surgical correction. As needed, he was taking proton inhibitor to control acid. Frequent burping. Heart burn with egg whites, pasta, and stress.


Acupuncture: Right-side Yin Horary points in Wood Order of LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, and KD10. Herbal formula Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Huang Qi, Bai Zhu, Dang Gui, Chen Pi, Huo Xiang, Zi Su Ye, Zhi Gan Cao, Sheng Jiang, and Da Zao) for a constitution with Lesser Yin and Greater Yin combination (aka Kapha in Ayurveda, Cold-Dry Melancholic in Unani, and Soeumin in Korean Sasang).


Treatment process: This patient had 8 visits in 3 months. Initially, acupuncture twice a week and gradually tapered down as symptoms improved. The GERD had lessened weekly. By the end of three months, symptoms were mostly gone. He hardly needed antacid, even after eating aggravating foods and stress.


Discussion: Cold body types have the more incidences of digestive tract diseases. And they do not do well with eggs and gluten. Huang Qi is good for prolapse and hernia. Digestive herbs such as Bai Zhu and Huo Xiang help to regulate acid reflux. Being young, this patient had a higher potential for improvement. From a highly educated and science-oriented family, this patient was pleasantly surprised with such a dramatic and quick improvement.

Chief complaint: Anxiety. Cancer Pain and Weakness.


Complaints: Large ovarian cancer 12.5 x 8.0 x 9.3 cm in the pelvis, causing fluid leakage into abdominal cavity. Took out 5,000 cc (5,000 liters, 1.3 gallons) of fluid from pelvis and again 2 weeks later of 5,200 cc.


Acupuncture: Right-side Yin Horary points in Wood-Order of LR1, HT8, SP3, LU8, and KD10 with central element Wood points SP1 and LU11 as a constitution of Lesser Yang and Greater Yang combination (aka Pitta-Vata in Ayurveda and Warm-Damp Sanguine in Unani) She had 25 acupuncture treatments in 6 months. Twice a week treatment at first and then the frequency eventually tapered down to every few weeks.   


Treatment process: The first 7 treatments had significantly reduced anxiety, pain, and water retention. After 2nd treatment, only 1,000 cc was taken out. After 5th treatment, 4,200 cc was taken out.  From the 8th visit, she had 6 sessions of chemotherapy at every 2 weeks. Acupuncture was again helpful by reducing many side effects of pain, nausea, fatigue, and neuropathy. After finishing chemotherapy, which had shrunk the tumor, she had surgical removal of the mass. Again, acupuncture reduced post-surgical pain and inflammation and promoted quicker recovery. Acupuncture helped clarity of the mind, walk further, lessen shortness of breath, lessen fatigue, and lessen abdominal pain, which were especially noticeable immediately after acupuncture. The patient came back 7 months later and reported stability of the improvement. She reported the cancer antigen marker CA-125 was measured at 2002 in June 2019. May 2020 test was a low 9, which was well within normal range of 0-35 kU/L. This time, the same acupuncture points were again helpful in furthering improvement.


Discussion: Acupuncture is powerful in reducing chemotherapy side effects, promote healing from surgery, and increasing mental sense of well-being.
